CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) Disclosures
DJmark assess quality standards for the UK mobile disco industry.
The following information was taken from the UK Government's Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) website. To confirm it is up-to-date, visit the CRB
The CRB’s aim is to help organisations in the public, private and voluntary sectors by identifying candidates who may be unsuitable to work with children or other vulnerable members of society.
It's not possible for an individual to apply for a CRB check. All checks must be undertaken by a so-called "Registered Body". This makes it difficult for many sole operators to obtain a report.
However, customers working for organisations such as schools and charities are likely to already have an arrangement either as a Registered Body or via an "Umbrella Organisation".
CRB disclosures are not really portable. You may wish to trust a certificate issued for recent work at a school if, for instance, you're organising a childrens party. It is always recommended to have a specific CRB check undertaken for each organisation to ensure you understand the basis on which the application is being made.
There are two types of CRB disclosure - Standard and Enhanced. Enhanced checks are only needed where a far greater degree of contact with children than the norm is expected, for example Teachers, Carers & Scout Leaders.
In Conclusion
The whole area around CRB checks is a minefield. Unless you are part of a Registered Body or your DJ has access via an Umbrella Organisation, you are unlikely to easily obtain a meaningful CRB disclosure for your DJ. Companies that advertise "Our DJs are CRB checked" are misleading you slightly because the basis of such checks might not be suitable for your specific needs.
For one-off events it is probably much easier to ensure that your DJ is simply not allowed to be left in a position whereby he/she is alone with children or vulnerable adults. If you are organising ongoing events utilising the same DJ then it makes sense to pursue a CRB check via one of the channels above.
